BWF is the international organization governing the sport of badminton, serving as the highest authority for the sport. The organization currently comprises 165 member countries and is supported by other recognized organizations such as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as well as national Olympic committees.
The current president of the organization is Danish Poul-Erik Høyer Larsen, who is a former professional badminton player.
The federation's responsibilities include working to develop, regulate, and promote awareness of the fantastic sport of badminton worldwide. The organization is primarily composed of a council of 25 members, and it has also established five continental federations, each with regional responsibilities corresponding to the global responsibilities of the BWF.
The sport of badminton traces its roots back to England in the late 19th century, where 14 clubs came together in 1893 to establish what was then known as the "Badminton Association". Over the next many years, the organization was responsible for setting and developing the game of badminton. As the game, and the sport in general, became more widespread, even outside of England, it became clear that the Badminton Association could not continue to maintain the governing role it had held thus far. It was the Badminton Association itself that proposed the idea of creating an international organization, and on July 5, 1934, the International Badminton Federation (IBF) was founded with its headquarters in Cheltenham, England.
Representatives from the national badminton associations of Canada, Denmark, England, France, Holland, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, and Wales were present at the founding meeting held in London.
IBF changed its name to the Badminton World Federation on September 24, 2006. Since October 1, 2005, its headquarters have been located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
