You’re likely to have seen their equipment on the court many times, and will continue to do so in the future. But do you know the story of how they came about and how they got to where they are today?
The story of Asics started in 1949, when Kihachiro Onitsuka wanted to make everyday shoes for children, believing that they generally wore the wrong footwear. It was just after the war, when poverty was rife, so he was probably right.
Onitsuka’s guiding principle was the latin phrase "anima sana in corpore sano", meaning "a healthy soul in a healthy body," and this was his motivation to start making Asics shoes.
The brand name Asics is an acronym for the latin phrase, and it was under this name that the brand was first launched in 1977.
This means that the first Asics shoes were made for school children, but it didn’t take long before Onitsuka also began working on sports shoes, and as early as 1950, the first sport shoes were released for basketball. In the years to come, more models joined the range and Onitsuka kept developing and getting better and better.
Subsequently, more and more sports were introduced and shoes were produced for tennis, dance, running, football, wrestling and many other sports.
Today, Asics is known around the world, mostly for their running shoes, but also for their sports shoes which are used for many different sports.
Badminton players in particular have grown fond of Asics’ badminton shoes, and there’s no avoiding them at badminton events.
For the last 10-15 years, Asics badminton shoes have been impossible to ignore, and not without reason. Asics’ shock absorption, which they call gel, is in a class of its own and really great to play in.
Especially the 2 classics, Asics Gel-Beyond and Asics Netburner Ballistic, are the ones badminton players are especially fond of. Even though they feel as if they were made to play badminton in, Gel-Beyond was originally a handball shoe that became popular with badminton players.
This was mainly thanks to Jan Ø. Jørgesen and Tine Baun choosing to play badminton in them, which led to a surge in sales among badminton players.
