Buying a shuttlecock is not just straightforward. Shuttlecocks are available at different speeds depending on how fast the shuttle should fly through the air.
When playing badminton, it is important to play with a shuttle that is neither too fast nor too slow. If you play with a shuttle that is unsatisfactory, it can quickly ruin the flow of the game!

Quality and price are often related and at the Badminton-shop you’ll find shuttlecocks in many different price ranges. Everything from 12 EUR pr. tube up to 25 EUR.- pr. tube. You also have the opportunity to buy larger quantities, and get an even better price.

Let’s get a little detail-oriented and dive into the technical in relation to shuttlecocks, which has a bearing on which one best suits your playing style and your level!
The speed of the shuttlecock
The speed of a shuttlecock depends on the temperature and quality of the shuttle. Most clubs have refrigerators that stand at a certain number of degrees so the shuttles stays healthy and well.
The shuttle can vary depending on which arena you are playing in. A tournament shuttlecock which is used for an international tournament in e.g. Asia is not necessarily the perfect shuttlecock for players in Europe.
A ’77 ‘shuttlecock is described as medium-slow, while a ’78’ shuttlecock is described as medium-fast.
A shuttlecock with speed 77 is ideal for beginners or exercisers. As this ball is a bit slower, it will give you a longer reaction time and if you are without great experience in badminton, it can be crucial. Check our selection of speed 77 shuttles here!
The shuttlecock with speed 78 is for the more experienced player and is often the ones the club provides for their training sessions. The shuttlecock with speed is 78 is generally the most used! Click here to watch our selection of speed 78 shuttles!
The temperature is crucial for the impact of the ball. The temperature is crucial for the humidity, which affects the speed of the shuttlecock.
The cork-end is also affected by the temperature, which expands according to the humidity in the arena.
When you test your new badminton shuttlecocks before starting the game, there is a little basic rule. When you shoot from one back line to the opposite side, the perfect speed of the shuttle will be the shuttle that lies between the two back lines on the opposite side.
Advice for storing your shuttlecocks
Here is some good advice on how to maintain the durability and speed of the shuttle.
To maintain the durability of the shuttle, we recommend placing the balls in a humidity cabinet that most clubs use. Otherwise you can keep them in a damp basement or an outdoor house – It is important, it is not too cold. The durability is reduced if the balls are exposed to direct sunlight or lie in a cold car. over a long period of time.
You can also influence the speed of the shuttles. To make the shuttlecock slower, they can be exposed to lower heat. You can also bend either every fourth feather or every other feather during the match – If you bend every other feather, they become very slow.
To increase the speed of he shuttle, you can expose it to higher heat. You can also bend the feathers inward. However, this is not seen that often..
However, feather shuttlecocks are not the only thing you can choose to play with, we also present plastic shuttlecocks:
Nylon shuttles
The plastic shuttles are made of nylon. If you are considering buying plastic shuttles, be aware that the shuttles fly differently than a feather shuttlecock.
The durability of a nylon shuttle is longer than at a feather shuttlecock. The precision of a nylon shuttle can be a little difficult to control – In terms of control, it will therefore be easier to control a feathe shuttlecock!
In 2020, a hybrid badminton shuttle was launched which revolutionized the market. The shuttle is made of a mixture of cork, nylon and natural feathers
The advantage of this kind of shuttle is the improvement of quality and speed. At the same time, the durability better than with normal feather shuttlecocks!
The durability is actually 3 times as long as a regular shuttlecock. This shuttle is perfect for exercisers or youth players who want to save money.
